The name “miramar” means “sea view” from the Spanish words “mira” for watch and “mar,” or sea. This area was originally settled by the pioneering Windes family. Seeking an adventure and escape from the depression, the family moved to Miramar Beach in 1933 to build a new life in paradise. Constructing their homestead where the Silver Sands outlet now sits, the Windes raised chickens for a living, often trading with area fishermen. Although the original Windes homesite burned in 1980, a lovely magnolia tree remains at the back of the Silver Sands outlet, commemorating this crucial piece of Miramar Beach history.
